Calendar of Events

Iron in the Hat is a raffle of items donated by members attending the meeting. Customarily each person brings one item to be donated, i.e. a tool or something the person made. Participation in Iron in the Hat is voluntary.

6 Meeting at Forgery School of Blacksmithing - Demo: Forging and construct of ferrous and non-ferrous metals by Chad and Brad Gunter.
Meeting starts at 9:00 AM.

Please be prepared to renew you SWABA membership at this meeting. Renewing at the meeting will save you postage. Color copies of the December newsletter "Pounders Press" will be handed out to paid up members that are present.
Tailgating is encouraged, please bring your extra tools and other items to sell or trade.

Driving instructions: The school is located 2 miles west of Moriarty, NM, off historic Route 66.
I-40 to Moriarty exit
at end of ramp turn right (west) on to old Rt. 66

Henry Pomfrit is an instructor with the Herefordshire, UK school of Technology

Demonstration will be on the Journeyman Certification Grille as per Mark Aspery

Hands on clinic Feb 2-4, 2009.
Cost for the Clinic $250.00 for both days
Clinic will be on forging the intermediate grille as per Mark Aspery consisting of four different forged corners with two "S" or "C" scrolls having a different type of scroll end on each end joined with a hot collar and fastened to the frame in a traditional manner.
Clinic limited to 10 students Pre registration required for the clinic
$50.00 discount if attending all 4 days

14-15 February 2009 - 3rd Annual Southwest Blacksmithing Conference held at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum - Las Cruces, NM :
This event is sponsored by Southwest Artist Blacksmith Association, Arizona Artist Blacksmith Association with help from the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum. Demonstrators are Craig May of Pine, Colorado and Jim Pepperl of Silver City, New Mexico. On Saturday, February 14th, Ben LoBue has invited attendees to an open house at his shop from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Directions to Ben's Shop:
From the Farm and Ranch Museum entrance turn left (east) onto Dripping Springs Road, Go 3.2 miles, turn right on Soledad Canyon Road (this will be the third paved road), stay on the pavement From the firehouse it is 1.5 mi. to Minniec Road, Turn right on Minniec Road. 5086 is the next to the last house on the right. The shop is behind the house.
There will be signs at the turn onto Minniec Road.

1-3 First Annual "Art of the Blacksmith" art show and Blacksmiths Conference
This event is sponsored: Southwest Artists Blacksmiths Association (SWABA) This is a juried art show that awards monetary prizes for the best blacksmith items in the following categories: 1.) Architectural Hardware,
2.) Furniture,
3.) Blades,
4.) Functional blacksmithing (anything not covered by the above categories) and
5.) Sculptural blacksmithing (pieces done strictly for artistic purposes)
The art show will be judged by master blacksmiths Robb Gunter, Charly Fary and Frank Turley.
This art show and conference is taking place at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds in Capitan, New Mexico about20 miles North of Ruidoso or 10 miles West of historic Lincoln, NM.
Nationally known Western Artist, Virgil Stephens will donate an original drawing of a Grizzly Bear blacksmith working at an anvil to be used for a Tee-shirt promoting the event.
